Day To Day Current Affairs - 4th September 2014

1.    Former CJI P Sathasivam appointed as Governor of Kerala

i. Former Chief Justice of India, Palaniswamy Sathasivam was appointed as the new Governor of Kerala. His appointment to the office will come into effect from the date, he will assume the charge of his office. 

ii. With this appointment, 65-year-old Sathasivam became the first Chief Justice of India to be appointed to the post of a Governor of a State, which is lower in warrant of precedence to the CJI.

iii. Apart from this, Sathasivam who was the 40th chief justice of India holding office from July 2013 to April 2014 is also the first non-political person to be appointed for a gubernatorial post by the new NDA government. 

2.    Govt sets up panel on unclaimed PPF, small savings deposits

i. The government has set-up a Committee to examine the un-claimed amount in PPF, Post Office and Savings Schemes. The committee will examine and recommend how this amount can be used to protect and further financial interest of the senior citizens.

ii. The seven member committee is being headed by the Deputy Governor H R Khan of Reserve Bank of India and will submit its reports by 31st December this year.

iii. The Committee has been set up in pursuance of the announcement made by the Minister in his Budget speech. The committee will also suggest whether the unclaimed deposit should come to government or be kept in a separate account.

3.    Australian PM on 2-day visit to India, Nuclear co-operation high on agenda

i. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott arrived in Mumbai this morning on a two-day India visit during which the two countries would look at ways to deepen strategic ties and strengthen two-way trade and commerce.

ii. Abbott called on Maharashtra Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao at the Raj Bhavan this morning. At the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, he paid homage to the victims of the Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks and laid a wreath at the memorial there.

iii. Mr. Abbott launched the 'New Colombo Plan' at the Mumbai University. Appreciating the University of Mumbai, Mr. Abbott said that there are many few institutions of learning any where in the world which have done as much to spread this light of knowledge as university of Mumbai.

iv. The New Colombo Plan is a concept of collective inter-governmental efforts to strengthen the economic and social development of member countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

4.    Karnataka became first state in India to launch Health Adalat

i. Karnataka became the first State in the country to launch a Health Adalat. The Health Adalat was launched by the State Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader in Gulbarga, Karnataka on 2 September 2014.

ii. It was launched to address health issues at the grassroots level and ensure that all health facilities extended by the government reached all sections of society.

iii. During Health Adalat the department will interact with public representatives and general citizen and understand their problems and concern, grievance about the health services and efforts would be made to provide solution then and there.

5.    Andhra gets new capital, to be located in Vijayawada region

i. The new capital of Andhra Pradesh will be located in the Vijayawada region, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu annouced in the state assembly on Thursday.

ii. Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated to create a new state of Telangana earlier this year in June. Hyderabad will serve as the shared capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for another 10 years until 2024. After that, Hyderabad will belong to the new state of Telangana.

iii. Nearly a decade ago, Naidu turned Hyderabad into some sort of Silicon Valley. It became an exceptionally prosperous IT hub. He now says he has ambitious plans to transform Andhra Pradesh into a "bustling" state and model it on Singapore.

6.    Green Building Congress announces three new rating systems

i. The Indian Green Building Council today announced three rating systems to cover schools, metro rail projects and new buildings.

ii. Announcing the launching of the three systems at the CII Green Building Congress 2014, Prem C Jain, Chairman of IGBC, said the New Building Rating System comes in the backdrop of IGBC and US Green Building Council parting ways on the Leed certification programme.

iii. “All these years, the US Leed certification was followed in rating new buildings. However, we have decided now to part ways and decided to have our own rating system for new buildings. We have adopted this approach as we believe India could become a next big Green Building base in the world,” he said.

iv. India now has a registered green building base of over 2.2 billion sq.ft , which has been achieved in about 10 years

v. Andrew McAllister, British Deputy High Commissioner, Hyderabad, said that the UK was committed to partnering with India in various initiatives in the energy and low carbon development.

7.    INS Sumitra commissioned by Navy chief

i. The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R.K. Dhowan today said that India will concentrate on manufacturing naval ships with indigenous technology for its best suited purposes to monitor the Indian coasts. 

ii. Speaking to news persons after dedicating INS Sumitra, one of the biggest surveillance ship of the Indian Naval Force at Chennai, the Admiral told that it was important for the Navy to maintain vigil at the coasts as ninety per cent of trade activities are being carried through seas. 
iii. The Naval Chief told that the blue print for the future of the Indian Navy was firmly anchored on self-reliance and presently 41 submarines are being built in the Country.

8.    Oxford Award for Chancellor of MS University 

i. Dr Mrunalinidevi Puar, Chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University at Vadodara, has been conferred with the "Best Manager" award by the Oxford Summit of Leaders (Science and Education) in UK, according to University Registrar Amit Dholakia.

ii. Dr Mrunalinidevi Puar is known for her research in availability of zinc in Indian food and was also awarded PhD by a Hyderabad based university, he said. 

iii. Dr Puar will get this award at the summit of leaders and International Socrates Award ceremony to be held in Oxford UK on October 14. Participants from 50 countries will attend it. 
iv. The MS University was eastblished as Baroda College in 1881 and it was converted into a university in 1949 after merger of erstwhile princely state of Baroda. 
v. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, father of the Indian constitution and Maharshi Aurbindo Ghosh were known personalities associated with this college. 

9.    Nishikori gives Japan first U.S. Open semi in 96 years

i. Kei Nishikori became the first man from Japan to reach the U.S. Open semifinals in 96 years, outlasting third-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-4 on Wednesday.

ii. The match went 4 hours, 15 minutes, and the 10th-seeded Nishikori managed to shake off any lingering exhaustion from his previous victory, which lasted 4-19 and ended at 2-26 a.m. Tuesday, equaling the latest finish in tournament history.

iii. Nishikori began slowly against the Australian Open champion, but eventually got his bearings and used crisp returns and strong net play to edge ahead.

iv. In Saturday’s semifinals, Nishikori will face No. 1 Novak Djokovic .

Note: The last Japanese semifinalist at the U.S. Open was Ichiya Kumagae in 1918. No man from the country had made it to the final four at any major tournament since Jiri Satoh at Wimbledon in 1933.

10.  Ritu Rani to lead Indian women's hockey team at Asian Games

i. Ritu Rani will lead a 16-member Indian women's hockey team in the upcoming Asian Games. Defender Deepika will be the vice-captain of the team.

ii. The team for the September 19 to October 4 Games in Incheon, South Korea, was selected by a panel comprising BP Govinda, Harbinder Singh and Surinder Kaur along with Director High Performance Roelant Oltmans and chief coach Neil Hawgood.

iii. The Indian eves will be seen taking on Thailand in their first match of the tournament on September 22. The next clashes on the cards for the Indian women are against China on September 24 and Malaysia on September 26.
